Yamaha DX/SY Series Service

Yamaha DX7 Internal Circuitry

The Yamaha DX and SY series revolutionized the industry with FM synthesis. While these digital powerhouses are famously robust, they face specific aging issues related to internal memory batteries, fading displays, and mechanical fatigue in the keybeds. As a retired engineer, I provide precision repairs to keep these FM legends operational for the next generation of synthesis.

FM Synthesis Hardware Repair

From the iconic DX7 to the advanced SY99, I handle all aspects of digital and analog-path maintenance:

  • Battery Replacement & Memory Protection: Installing high-quality coin cell holders to make future battery swaps simple without further soldering.
  • OLED Display Upgrades: Replacing original, dim backlit LCDs with modern, high-contrast OLED screens for superior readability in studio environments.
  • Tactile Switch Replacement: Replacing unresponsive front-panel buttons to restore snappy, reliable data entry.

Keybed & Mechanical Restoration

Yamaha's FS keybeds are among the best ever made, but they require periodic maintenance to retain their feel:

  • Key Bushing & Grease: Cleaning and re-lubricating the key mechanisms to eliminate "clacking" and side-to-side wobble.
  • Aftertouch Sensor Repair: Cleaning and calibrating the aftertouch strip to restore expressive control.
  • Contact Cleaning: Precision cleaning of the key contact PCB to fix dropped notes or inconsistent velocity response.

Expert Calibration

Even digital synths have analog output stages. I use laboratory-grade oscilloscopes to verify that the DAC (Digital-to-Analog Converter) and output filters are performing at their original low-noise specifications, ensuring your FM tones remain crisp and clear.
