Minimoog Model D Stabilization

Minimoog Model D Circuitry

The Moog Minimoog Model D is the quintessential analog synthesizer, but its early discrete designs are highly sensitive to temperature and component aging. This restoration focused on transforming a drifting unit into a rock-solid studio performer through precision calibration and power rail stabilization.

Technical Scope

Restoring a Model D requires a deep understanding of its unique exponential converter and filter ladder circuits. My approach combines vintage-correct parts with modern reliability standards.

VCO Board Stabilization

I performed a full recalibration of the pitch CV scaling and high-frequency tracking. By replacing critical aging trimmers with high-precision multi-turn variants, the oscillators now track accurately across five octaves.

Power Supply Rebuild

The heart of tuning stability is a clean power source. I overhauled the power supply board with low-ESR electrolytic capacitors and verified the voltage regulation to ensure the +/-10V rails remain noise-free.

Mechanical & Expressive Touch

Beyond the electronics, the Pratt-Read keybeds often suffer from hardened bushings. This unit received a full key-leveling service and new silicone bushings to restore that classic, fast Minimoog action. The aftertouch and mod-wheel linkages were also cleaned and lubricated for smooth expressive control.
